[Photo: NMG]A group of Jubilee-affiliated professionals wants the African Union (AU) and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to hold Nasa leader Raila Odinga responsible should there be civil strife and instability due to crisis emanating from the repeat presidential election.Lawyers Ababu Namwamba, Danson Mungatana, and the former Senate Speaker Ekwee Ethuro on Tuesday presented a petition at the headquarters of AU and IGAD, both in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia asking the agencies to put in place measures to deter Raila's 'subversive activities'.But can this really deter Raila from whichever activities that Jubilee claims will bring instability in the country? Well, the answer is no, going by previous events. When Western diplomats warned 'some leaders' against violence and stoking community tensions, Siaya senator James Orengo came out gun blazing."We are not going to be blackmailed. We are not very enthusiastic about going to the united States of America. The diplomats have overstepped its mandate, our sovereignty cannot be surrendered to anyone. We are taken aback by utterances by the diplomatic community. They too have issues from their mother countries to deal with. America also has its own problems," Orengo was quoted by the Star at the beginning of October. So, even if the widely toothless AU was to stamp its authority and issue stern warning to Raila and other Nasa leaders, the likelihood is that the warning would be quickly dismissised as 'hot air'.AU also has got no very 'good standing' especially before the eyes of the Western nations which often see it is as a tool by some Africa leaders to stay in power and crack down on the Opposition.
