Strong suspicions among the National Super Alliance (NASA) principals is the reason why Raila Odinga has not officially nominated Kalonzo Musyoka as his running mate, and why the Wiper leader is still a presidential candidate, political scientist Mutahi Ngunyi has explained. In a list of candidates released by IEBC last week, it caught many by surprise that Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka is still a presidential candidate, even after being chosen to be Raila’s running mate in the August 8 presidential contest. The question that Mr Ngunyi’s team of analysts explored was when Kalonzo submitted his presidential papers to IEBC. “Whether or not Kalonzo is presidential candidate is not the issue. The issue is this: when did he submit his papers to IEBC?” the seasoned political scientist, who correctly predicted the outcome of the 2013 presidential contest, said in his weekly YouTube video. “Did he submit them before endorsing Raila or did he submit them after endorsing Raila?” he posed. He argues that if the former vice president delivered his application after Raila was announced as NASA’s flag-bearer, then there is a big problem in the coalition. If before, then why has he not withdrawn his candidature? The analysts also question why Raila has not officially nominated Kalonzo as his running mate. They argue that he may decide to announce ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi — the only principal in NASA without a backup plan should they lose the presidential contest — as his running mate. And Kalonzo, aware of the suspicious, has submitted his papers to IEBC as the Wiper presidential candidate just in case Raila turns against him, the political scientists argue.Click here to watch the full video.
