Do you know why Kenya Airways is abbreviated as KQ and not, say, KA?

Well, let's take some lessons in history and business.

Kenya Airways initially started as East African Airways.

The company was founded in 1946 as a regional airline that served Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania but with its headquarters in Nairobi.

However, when the East African Community (EAC) collapsed in 1977, East African Airways as an entity came to an end.

It was then that Kenya Airways was born from the collapsed East African Airways.

But by this time, Korea already had its aviation industry running and it was called Korean Air.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) had assigned Korea Air the code ‘KA’ and so Kenya Airways could not get it.

Kenya had to choose another letter, with luck making it letter Q.

We became KQ.
