The performance of Kenya at Gold Coast was not impressive. Kenya was ranked at position fourteen after registering only 4 golds, 7 silver medals and 6 bronze medals which gave a total of 17 medals.
Despite our rivals not being in the competition like Germany, USA, France among others we performed dismally. But what could have caused this performance? Here are some of the reasons.
Lack of diversity.
If you compare Kenya with Australia, there is so much difference, our major field which we rely on is just track events and ignore fields events like swimming, long jump, cycling, among others. Now our chances are very limited and incomparable with countries like Australia who had participants in every field.
Lack of proper training equipment.
Some of the facilities that may facilitate some special field events are not available. This hampers the athletes from giving more attention to field events and they end up concentrating on just track events. Also, some facilities are available but are not in good conditions.
Poor management.
It goes without saying the Rio Di Janeiro at Brazil mismanagement is just an example. Too many nonfunctioning bodies and staff who are just squandering money after doing totally nothing. Some bodies that are set for field events should be abolished since we have nothing to present in field events.
Lack of preparedness.
Some of our athletes would start very well but at finishing point they looked tired and end up losing their pace. This was common in most cases which we were supposed to scoop all the medals but we did not attain. We should focus on the finishing pace during practice to avoid such future embarrassment.
