New statistics show that inflation rate went up by 0.61 percent in last month.
At 8.04 percent, the rate drained pockets of millions of Kenyans especially on the cost of some food items and electricity.
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) on Thursday said in a report that the food and non-alcoholic drinks index rose by 1.04 percent.
“Between July and August 2017, the food and non-alcoholic drinks index increased by 1.04 per cent to a notable rise in the cost of some food items.”
The state agency said the increase in food prices could partly be blamed on supply constraints, particularly in the second half of the month after the August 8 General Election.
Electricity bills also went up in August compared to the same period last year. 200Kwh of electricity cost Sh3,944 up by 89 per cent from Sh2,078 in August last year.
Prolonged drought and its effects on the agricultural sector in the country has been a major highlight too in the inflation debate.
