The IEBC officially gave mandate to candidates to launch their campaigns yesterday. This was after several presidential candidate were certified to run for the seat.
Although, several presidential candidates have shown interest, only two teams are prominent the Kenyan political field, jubilee and National Super Alliance party.
Voters in Kenya are either for NASA whose presidential candidate is Raila Odinga or Jubilee which is led by Uhuru Kenyatta thus making it a two horse race.
Various reasons have made it this way:
The politicians who are in these two parties are prominent leaders who have been in the Kenyan government for quite sometimes now hence they are viewed are powerful and influential. Considering this, they have formed these parties based on tribal backgrounds.
With this tribal grouping, the parties have scooped popularity in their tribal homes thus they have outdone other presidential candidate who are doing “non-tribal politics”
Campaigns are also expensive to hold due to the numerous amount of funds needed to run the rallies and in “buying tea” for supporters thus needs a lot of investing. Both jubilee and NASA have huge accounts to hold these rallies thus outdoing the other candidates by a huge margin.
Another major reasons that has made the two parties shine in politics is the fact that Kenyans don’t trust these independent candidates in the name of they will waste their vote thus going for the political giants.
Although it is hard to predict who will be the next president come 8th August, it is a race between Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, no third party
