[Photo: businessinsider.com]The western European democracies and North America which basically consists of US and Canada, are known to keenly follow Kenyan elections despite Kenya being one of the most vibrant democracies in Africa. In 2013 for instance, the US which prides herself as the only political and economic superpower issued a stern statement which seemed to discourage voters against electing President Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto, who were then facing grave crimes at the International Criminal Court. The statement that was issued in the run-up to 2013 polls by the then US Under-Secretary of State in charge of African Affairs Johnny Carson, came to be popularly christened locally as 'choices have consequences'.In April 2013, the Uhuru-Ruto duo presidential victory was seen as a disapproval of the West's 'modern imperialism' under former President Barack Obama. That single 'choices have consequences' phrase has come to dominate Kenyans daily conversations, evidence that Kenyans pay close attention to regular communications coming from US government especially those concerning Kenyan presidential elections. But why? Well, in this 2017 for instance, US has a new 'reckless leader' in the name of President Donald Trump who is both unpredictable and also tough on 'lazy Africans who only know how to sleep and make babies'. In short, everybody has been keen to find out what President Trump's administration has to say about Kenya's polls which may amount to sanctions, withdrawal of aid, arms embargo and isolation of Kenya among others.
