Chege said the illicit brews are repackaged and sold to unsuspecting consumers, mainly targeting the young people.

He said the re-emergence could be a well-orchestrated scheme to ensure youths without voters cards fail to enlist during the one-month exercise commencing on Monday January 16.

"There is a cartel using local illegal brewers to achieve their personal political agendas by ensuring youths in President Kenyatta's backyard don't register as voters ahead of August 8 polls," said Chege.

The legislator accused a section of local administrators of allegedly colluding with the cartels to protect the illegal brewers and challenged the security agents to up their game to combat the menace before it wrecks havoc.

"I urge the police and the administration officers to work with local communities and elected leaders in the county to root out all sources of the killer brews," said the lawmaker.

Chege said local leaders should organise for a meeting to plan how to fight the menace and raid illegal brews dens. He warned brewers and sellers to immediately stop the trade or face the wrath of the government.
