A Kisii Member of County Assembly (MCA) wants the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) disbanded.

The MCA accuses the authority of tolerating inflation of travel fares by public service vehicles operators.

This comes amid crisis in the transport sector across the region, with commuters being compelled to pay double the amount of travel fees during the festive season.

Speaking at his Kiogoro backyard on Sunday, Kiogoro MCA Samuel Apoko said the regulatory body was ‘a waste of taxpayers’ money’ since the operators had regularly violated the rights of commuters.

“Sometimes it’s really disappointing that poor Kenyans have to be subjected to this impunity by transport operators by paying double the amount of fare they are supposed to pay. We have a regulatory body which is basically toothless. They are wasting taxpayers’ money yet they can’t combat impunity in the transport sector,” he said.

He termed exploitation of the commuters as ‘corruption’ and urged the government to crack the whip on the regulatory body to bring sanity to the sector.

“I keep on wondering why they (operators) wait till festive seasons and other calamities to hike fare with impunity. That is corruption that should be dealt with by the government. I want the NTSA to be disbanded because they have failed to deliver their mandate,” he added.

He also urged Kenyans to rise up against impunity to save the country from corruption.
