The Kenya National Library Services (KNLS) Kisumu branch is training 15 girls to empower them with skills to develop mobile phone applications.
The training started a month ago and will come to an end in September this year.
After the training, the girls most of them High School and College leavers will be expected to develop mobile applications that can help in solving various challenges, key among them traffic jam menace and proper waste management, especially in the counties.
In an interview with a Hivisasa writer on Monday, KNLS Kisumu branch official Mr. Moses Imbayi said 13 girls from the lakeside city and two are from Kakamega and Bungoma counties are currently undergoing the training.
“We started the project by advertising for trainee-ship positions. A total of 38 girls applied and we settled on 15,” said Mr. Imbayi.
He explained that they decided to work with girls since ‘women are lagging behind’ in matters to do with technology.
“The broader picture is to make these girls self employed after the training,” he noted.
The project is being implemented in partnership with Germany’s Goethe Institute.
“KNLS Kisumu came up with this idea to empower girls in technology and we decided to come in as partners so as to make it a reality,” the Institute’s official Ms. Elizabeth Wichenje stated.
Zuleka Abdullahi and Nasra Yusuf, who are among the 15 girls being trained, said they are happy to be part of the project.
