The Kenya Revenue Authority has launched an awareness campaign in Kisumu, as they hope to increase the number of taxpayers in the county.

The taxing authority is targeting an increased number of 7,000 in the first quarter of 2018 and is targeting the informal sector in their campaign.

For that reason, KRA is targeting mainly boda boda operators and other traders operating in the informal sector.

According to KRA Western Regional Coordinator Kevin Safari, who spoke to journalists, they aim to roll out the plan to other 10 counties in the Western region.

“We appreciate revenue from every sector including the informal sector, that is why we are also reaching out to boda boda operators,” said Mr Safari.

He added that most traders have been fearing to pay their taxes, saying they fear the taxing authority.

For that reason, the authority is now pushing to change the negative perception by most Kenyans.

“We want to change that perception,” added Safari.

They also moved around donating reflector jackets to boda boda operators, which was part of their effort to contribute to the road safety campaigns.

They will now move to other areas as they increase the awareness across the country to increase their tax collection rates.
