The cabinet secretary for sports and national heritage Rashid Echesa has declared the Lamu County's Riyadha Mosque a national monument.
Sports and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Rashid Achesa made the declaration in a gazette notice.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 25 (1) (b) of the National Museums and Heritage Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Sports and Heritage declares the open space specified in the Schedule, which he considers to be of historical interest, to be a National Monument within the meaning of the Act,” read the gazette notice on Friday.
The CS also issued a 60-days timeframe to persons who may be opposed to the declaration of the mosque which lies on a 1.31 hectare piece of land in Langoni area, to file their complaints.
Construction of the mosque dates back to 1892 and hosts over 10,000 pilgrims during Maulid festival annually.
