Lamu residents have threatened to hold protests if the nomination of three candidates to the county assembly is not nullified.
As the Star reports, the locals said the trio; two from PDU and one from Kanu hail from other counties, terming their nomination dictatorial. They said they will also seek legal redress to bar the three from serving as Members of County Assembly (MCAs) in Lamu. They said there are many qualified people in the devolved unit who can do the job and that they will resist such attempts.“Political parties have no right to impose on us leaders from other counties. Is it that Lamu does not have leaders capable of being nominated, or what? What is the motive when you nominate people from a different county to serve as MCAs in Lamu? We’ll never accept that and we plan to seek legal redress,” said Feisal Miji, one of the residents. They said Seita Rimoine and Festus Kihuha Ndirangu both of PDU and Jane Wanjiku Ndung’u of Kanu don’t hail from Lamu County. The residents allege that Rimoine comes from Kabete while Ndirangu and Wanjiku are from Kajiado and Kiambu respectively. They claimed some people want to take the county back to “the old days of colonisation,” and that the move is meant to suppress their freedom.
