The rare show of unity around an issue by women leaders on Saturday at Kenyatta National Hospital is what we need for Kenya to prosper and overcome ethnic divisions. Elected women leaders, from NASA, Jubilee and other political parties, were united when they visited women who had given birth at the country’s biggest referral hospital. It did not matter the communities where the leaders came from: what was important was standing with fellow women. That is why we saw leaders from communities such as Luo, Kikuyu, Kalenjin, Samburu and others shelved their sharp political differences to speak with one voice. ODM’s Gladys Wanga, Jubilee’s Susan Kihika and Sabina Chege were among the key women leaders at the venue. In a country where leaders have in the past only shown support for their political sides, this rare show of unity on an issue that affects the “common man”, represents the Kenya we want. The elected leaders in the country should show the passion the women exhibited over the weekend when handling problems affecting the people of Kenya. This should mark the end of incitement by some leaders, and misusing young people to destroy property and cause violence.
