The national government has set aside over Sh100 million to expand Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) in Eldoret town.
Hospital's Chief Executive Officer Dr. Wilson Aruasa says once complete, the unit will be able to handle emergency services three times more than the current capacity.
Addressing a media briefing in Eldoret town on Wednesday, Dr. Aruasa said an expansion of the ICU will go a long way to improving service delivery at the hospital that handles patients from the North Rift region and neighboring Uganda and South Sudan.
He said for effective neurosurgical operations, the hospital needs to have a modern ICU backup and neurons wards.
“We are expanding our ICU capacity more than three times. We are aware that we can’t do some of the complex neurosurgical operations without ICU backup as patients have to go from theatre straight into ICU sometimes,” said the MTRH boss.
The project will also drastically reduce long queues of patients that are witnessed at the Accident and Emergency section in the Hospital due to a high number of patients received daily at the second largest public health facility in the country.
“Expansion together with the neuro wards will cost Sh60 million and equipping will almost cost a similar amount and that brings the total figure to Sh100 million which is fully funded by the national government,” Dr. Aruasa said.
