West Pokot Senator and gubernatorial hopeful  John Lonyangapuo has named US-based scholar Nicholas Atudonyang as his deputy ahead of the August polls.

The lawmaker is seeking to unseat the incumbent governor Simon Kachapin on a Kanu party ticket.

Kachapin, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto is seeking re-election on a Jubilee Party ticket.

Speaking on Tuesday, Lonyangapuo revealed that he had settled on Atudonyang after factoring in a number of aspects, including regional balance.

He lauded his tenure as senator for the past four and half years, exuding confidence in beating Kachapin in the race for the county's top seat.

"I am happy I have represented my people diligently and I hope that come August, they will allow me to serve them as their governor. I am happy to have been rated as Senator number one in the 47 countries. This shows the Pokot community has the potential to lead in various fields," he said.

"I am optimistic that with the help of my deputy, we shall win the elections and help in transforming the county," he added.
