With just a few hours to put an end to the year 2017, we cannot afford to miss out on “the man of the year awards”. Holding two high profile political posts in Kenya, Fred Okengo Matiang'i has made tremendous turn of events that have shaped the country both positively and negatively.
Matiang'i is the Cabinet Secretary for education and the acting Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Internal Security and Coordination of after the sudden demise of Joseph Nkaissery.
And just when our minds were beginning to settle and end this dreadful year in peace, Matiang’i pulled more surprises to earn himself the man of the year title.
The 2017 KCSE results were released in a record time, but the results were rejected from all corners of the country, even with teachers who marked them.
The number of students qualified to join was the worst ever recorded in the history of Kenya.
Even when this was not over, he ordered merger of boards of schools sharing compounds, amalgamation of their management and mass transfer of school heads.
More so, he has introduced new changes in the education sector that will take effect from January. All these changes were rejected and all the affected schools promised to strike if their heads will be forced out.
Matiang’I has proven himself unstoppable in deciding many changes in the education sector. Not forgetting the fights with book publishers and duels with teacher’s trade unions, these events have made him hated and loved with equal measures.
