[Photo: Kenya today.com]Kenyans on Wednesday were angered by a directive by acting Interior CS Fred Matiang’i that Friday (tomorrow) will be a holiday. This is after he indicated that the holiday (Idd Ul Adha ) will only be for those who profess the Muslim faith and, therefore, directed that non-Muslims report to work as usual."Employers should allow them [Muslims] to be away from work, but for non-Muslims, this will be a normal working day. The holiday is only listed for Muslims, but plans are underway to cover all Kenyans. A bill will be presented to Parliament to make it a national public holiday," Matiang'i said in a notice. The Constitution of Kenya lists Madaraka, Mashujaa and Jamhuri days as national days which it says 'shall be public holidays'. However, it says that Parliament may enact legislation prescribing other public holidays.Following the announcement, Kenyans took on social media where many accused the government of discriminating against non-Muslims.Some asked whether Muslims will work on Christmas Day and the Easter holiday, events marked by Christians.Idd Ul Adha, also called the ‘Sacrifice Feast’, is celebrated worldwide every year where Muslims honour Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac as an act of obedience to God.
