Mau Mau veterans from Nyeri County say they will not register as voters amid fears that the biometric voter registration (BVR) machines could expose their colonial crimes during the struggle for the country's independence.

According to the Daily Nation, the veterans claim that if they enlisted as voters through the BVR kits, they could be arrested for the crimes committed against the British colonialists, further calling for affirmation from relevant agencies that all would be well if they registered as voters.

“The men are quite convinced that placing their fingerprints on the BVR machines will expose them. Most of them are Mau Mau veterans who were aggressively involved in the struggle for independence,” Peter Kamulu, a parliamentary hopeful said on Monday.

He has since challenged the IEBC to conduct civic education and voter sensitisation programmes to ensure that eligible voters get registered.

“That is the reason we need IEBC to conduct intensive user-friendly civic education which should be a door-to -door exercise,” he noted.

The second phase of mass voter registration is set to run for a month, starting January 16 through to February 14.
