When the kinsmen are busy consuming themselves silly, the father character is missing in action and the next generation is raised mainly by women. Local schools are mainly staffed with female teachers, clans headed by mothers, house of worship the same and so it’s generally a society raised by women.
In such circumstances, some women have been victims of violence and the husbands will go scot-free; it’s no news when a woman is battered. That’s why you find that any cases of violence occur either in the evening when the husband is drunk and weak or when he has totally blacked out. The Good Book is clear on this, we only reap what we sow.
With the same breath, something could be done to prevent men; a husband and father, from turning the bar into his second home. Yes, we might blame it on socialization, but we must make an effort to invest in the sustainability of the family unit if we’re going to succeed as a nation.
We must all address the underlying issues that make us to turn on each other and batter and kill each other when we had vowed to love each other until death did us part. Yes, sending the culprits to jail may serve as a lesson to others. But that’s just one of the symptoms of a deeply-rooted disease.
We cannot blame it on alcohol alone. We should look at the whys as well. Why are these men seeking refuge in alcohol? They definitely have sorrows to drown. We all need answers, and if we’re honest with ourselves, the answers won’t need much prodding to pop out.
