A Meru businessman, Isaiah Kithinji, has filed a petition at the Meru  High Court seeking to have the county's governor Peter Munya barred from vying for reelection during the August polls.

In the petition filed on Tuesday, Kithinji accused the Council of Governors chair of mismanaging County funds, claiming that Munya spent just Ksh650million from the Ksh2.8billion set aside for development.

"Only Sh650 million was actually spent from the Sh2.8 billion development budget," the petitioner noted.

"He is an active participant in the mismanagement and plunder of the county government," he added.

The petitioner further accused Munya of favouritism and nepotism in the award of county employment opportunities.

"These were guided by favoritism, ulterior motives and disregarded the employment of deserving and qualified candidates," he said.

IEBC, EACC and the Auditor General have been enjoined in the petition.

The matter is set to be heard on April 15, 2017.

Governor Munya is facing stiff competition from Meru Senator Kiraitu Murungi who is gunning for governorship on a Jubilee Party ticket.
