Nairobi gubernatorial hopeful Miguna Miguna has unveiled 24-year old former Laikipia University student leader James Gathungu as his running mate during the forthcoming general elections.

Speaking on Saturday at the Intercontinental Hotel, Miguna defended his move to settle on a youth as his deputy, stating that his administration is keen to inject youth blood into leadership.

“Kenyans have functioning brains. They can tell the difference between a transformative leadership and one based on impunity," he noted.

Miguna further maintained that he will be vying as an independent candidate, observing that the constitution grants aspirants the right to vie as independents.

"We are independent candidates and we have a right as citizens to run on the ticket as independents, the same manner as parties are allowed to field candidates," he said.

"We are not here requesting or begging for space we are occupying space guaranteed by the constitution. we must build politics based on the integrity of leaders," he added.

Miguna will face off with the incumbent governor Evans Kidero (ODM) and Jubilee Party's Senator Mike Sonko.

Former Presidential candidate Peter Kenneth is also expected to vie as an independent candidate after losing the Jubilee Party ticket to Senator Sonko during the just concluded party primaries.
