A good percentage of the county's youthful population engage in Miraa business that is ironically thriving, but doing less impact on the region's economy.

It is with this that the county's leadership should ban this  destructive business so as to restore the once booming economy.

This may sound quite unusual, especially to Garissa youths and like-minded businessmen trading with the commodity but it is among the most destructive habits of the Kenyan- Somalis living in North Eastern counties.

Just as football gambling and alcohol consumption have destroyed many, this narcotic has completely taken over the lives of many promising young youths, otherwise productive parents and and even businessmen thus reducing them to mere wrecks.

It is an open secret that Miraa brings in little profit while taking an approximately Sh5-10 million shillings every week from Garissa and Wajir economies.

This is situation has widely been exacerbated by the fact that it has taken away the very fine man power to work due to its addictive nature.

Furthermore, it has created a hopeless society of single-parent families mostly led by women. In short, it’s a disaster of unthinkable proportion that calls for an urgent intervention.
