Moi University being one of the best universities in Kenya offers a variety of media courses. There are three major journalism and media-related courses that a student can pursue, that is; Media Science, Journalism, and Linguistics, Media and Communication (mostly abbreviated as LMC). Out of the three, LMC stands out because of the fact that it empowers a journalism student in almost all the corners of Journalism, unlike others which are mostly specialized.
Under Linguistics, Media and Communication, a student studies three courses in one. This not only makes a student more marketable but also knowledgeable. The current media industry has undergone a huge revolution and a lot is expected of a journalist besides just reporting.
A journalist must first of all and above everything be a good communicator. Linguistics, Media and Communication students at Moi University are privileged to study Communication in in-depth because as the name suggests, it is part and parcel of the course. The student will attend specialized classes on communication and get trained on how best to pass information. The training makes the student a good communicator which is extremely crucial for Journalist. The most journalist only reports, they state what has happened and answer the 5 Ws and H thinking that is all. A journalist is however supposed to communicate and if possible arouse emotions wherever necessary.
With the constantly changing Media industry, a good journalist has to be multi-lingual. He or she must be flexible with language so as to adapt to changing environments. An LMC student is empowered on this under the first part of the course where he or she will study Linguistics. This makes the student be able to communicate in various languages comfortably. The student is taught various languages such as English, Kiswahili, French, German and Chinese depending on his or her preference. A multi-lingual journalist is more marketable than a journalist who has specialized in one language.
The third and the last part of this course is Media. This is now where the student is taught the core requirements of a journalist. Aside from the student being a good communicator and multi-lingual, he or she has to have a complete understanding of Media. This part of the course will prepare the student to survive in the industry by equipping him with media ethics and law knowledge among others.
Linguistics, Media, and Communication is also an extremely marketable course. The course allows students to work in other journalism-related courses such as Public Relations. Therefore one does not necessarily have to work in the journalism industry.
