Gatundu MP Moses kuria has embarked on a mission to rename top KPL side Thika United to Mt Kenya United FC in a bid to widen it's fan base to levels of Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards.

The MP made the remarks while attending the relegation playoff match between the side and Ushuru FC at Thika stadium which Thika United stamped one foot into the premier League with a 2-1 win over Ushuru.

The MP said that Thika United is their Club and he is mobilizing support for the team with huge prizes upon the return legue to be played on Sunday at Narok stadium.

“Thika United is our team, as leaders of these region I am mobilizing them to support this team and we’ve got huge cash prices for the boys if we beat Ushuru on Sunday and retain our place in the KPL,” he said.

He said that if they succeed to win the KPL next season, he will apply to the registrar of societies and FKF to change the clubs name.

“If we succeed, our aim is to win the KPL next season. We also plan to rebrand the team to have that weighty appeal, so we will be applying to the Registrar of societies and FKF to rename the team to Mount Kenya United to have the support of this region among other big plans,” kuria added.

Since inception in 2000, the club has had a series of names including its pioneer name Beirut Fc, Madeisca FC upon promotion to Nationwide Superleague (NSL) then Thika United FC.
