Sabatia MP Alfred Agoi has hinted at sponsoring a Bill in the 12th Parliament that could see the removal of the provision for independent candidates during elections.
According to the lawmaker, the emergence of independent candidates has turned politics chaotic, attributing the rising number of independents to the law that was passed to bar party hopping.
“It was a mistake created in the law. I propose that the Constitution be amended to do away with this loophole as the provision is making our politics turn chaotic,” he said.
“I will personally sponsor this amendment after the August 8 general election so that this position is removed,” he added.
This year's general elections has witnessed the highest number of candidates express interest in vying as independents.
Majority of the independent candidates cited unfair treatment and lack of internal democracy within political parties as reason that informed their decision to vie as independents.
The major political players (Jubilee Party and Opposition alliance NASA) have urged the electorate to reject independent candidates during the forthcoming general elections.
