MultiChoice Kenya has joined the list of television providers 'forced' to slash its subscription fees. 

According to Chief Executive Eric Odipo this is a result of a increasingly 'tough economic environment'.

At the moment MultiChoice Kenya faces a threat from internet television, live streaming and subscription video on demand service providers.

Its competitors Netflix and Showmax joined the Kenyan market a changed the game for many viewers looking for television entertainment.

According to the Communications Authority of Kenya, the number of people subscribing (to pay TV) increased from 3.6 million to 3.7 million in the first quarter of 2017.

Odipo says business have been coerced into repackaging their services. 

He added that monthly premium DStv has been reduced by 3.4 per cent, while Compact Plus and Access has been reduced by 4.15 percent and 9.86 percent.

As a result Multichoice has lowered its subscription fees and expanded the number of channels they have to offer.
