Elgeyo Marakwet Senator Kipchumba Murkomen on Saturday vowed never to plant maize again and instead said he would venture into avocado farming after numerous scandals that have recently rocked the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB).
The Senate Majority leader through his official Twitter account revealed that despite supplying the cereals board with maize six months ago, he has not yet received any payments just like any other farmers.
"Six months ago, I delivered my maize to NCPB. Until now I haven’t been paid. From next year I won’t plant maize again. I have no contract with anyone to feed him/her with Ugali. I am moving to avocados. It’s time for the farmer in me to think profit first," tweeted Murkomen.
The vocal Senator was however asked to delay his move and instead focus on fighting for the rights of farmers.
"Leader of Majority Senate, before you venture into the avocado farming, kindly fight for the rightful farmers whose produce is rotting to be paid. Have the real farmers benefit and not traders. That’s the least you can do for them. And, if possible have the 'cartels' prosecuted. Profits later..." Busia Women Representative Florence Mutua said.
Murkomen in his response warned the Woman Rep. to get prepared to miss ugali as he was going to lead all farmers to vacate planting maize.
"Mhesh, I will lead them away from maize. You better start changing your diet, my friend. Ugali every hour will soon be a thing of the past. It’s time you focus on kuku," he replied.
NCPB has been in the spotlight for the past one week after revelations that over Sh1.9 billion was paid to traders who masqueraded as farmers and supplied maize to the cereals board.
