The Court of Appeal ruling that nullified Governor Alfred Mutua’s election is a big boost for Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka’s 2022 presidential bid, political pundit Peter Ngure has said.
Ngure claims that Kalonzo will be the biggest beneficiary if a fresh gubernatorial election is conducted in Machakos as ordered by the court of appeal.
The analyst observes that by the fact of his re-election being nullified, Mutua has lost grip of the county in terms of the support base.
Ngure observes that governor Mutua had managed to cement a firm support base but it is now under threat after his election was nullified.
In an interview on Friday, Ngure said that Kalonzo’s 2022 presidential bid has now been boosted.
“Kalonzo will be the biggest beneficiary should Machakos go to fresh gubernatorial election in terms of cementing support base and reclaiming his lost political glory,” he said.
The analyst also said that Kalonzo’s 2022 is more realistic and is likely to get the regions full nod should the Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal ruling in case Mutua appeals.
Ngure noted that the political supremacy battle between Mutua and Kalonzo will be determined by the Supreme Court if the governor opts to appeal.
Both Kalonzo and Mutua have declared an interest in the 2022 presidential election.
Mutua in the recent days has been under immense attacks from local Machakos leaders who accuse him of campaigning for 2022 at the expense of service delivery.
Kalonzo and Mutua fell out in 2013 and remain political nemeses despite pressure from a section of local leaders for them to reunite.
In April, a section of Kamba leaders endorsed Kalonzo’s 2022 bid, saying that he is the regions kingpin and candidate for the top seat.
Mutua dismissed the endorsement terming it fake and meant to cause rifts among the Kamba community.
