Kalonzo had fought hard to ensure that Wavinya Ndeti won the August 8 gubernatorial contest.

But as fate would have it, Mutua was able to reclaim his seat for his second term.

Mutua is regarded as a serious threat to Kalonzo's grip on the Ukambani region where the former Vice-President is seen as the leader.

The reason why Kalonzo campaigned against a Mutua win is that it would mean that his influence in Ukambani was on the wane.

Wavinya filed a petition challenging Mutua's re-election but a court dismissed the petition today, ruling that Mutua was validly re-elected.

The ruling is not just a Wavinya blow but also a Kalonzo blow as Mutua intends to run for the presidency in 2022.
