Most people, especially the low income earners occupying both the informal and middle income residential units, have a dream of one day upgrading to the next level.

A huge chunk of them hope to one day propel themselves to one of the high end living destinations.

In Nakuru, for instance, this will mean the likes of Section 58, Milimani and Nakuru Blankets estates, characterized by heavy security and clean and well organized and clear road network.

However, with many residents from ghettos like Bondeni and Mwariki hoping some day they get to this level, its notable that benefits of living in slums, to some extent, outweigh those of occupying the suburbs.

Here are some of these benefits;

1. Unity and cooperation

Living in a slum means oneness and unity.

Unlike in the suburbs where neighbours, though only an electric fence apart, do not need each other for whatever reasons, slum dwellers have mastered the art of unity.

This always pays back at times of distress.

2. Low cost of living

Milimani residents will obviously spend more on their daily needs as compared to their counterparts from Kiratina.

The social gap brings with it some level of pride, with the ones deemed highly placed going for more expensive products and services, though on most occasions, they are of the same quality and quantity.

Shops in suburbs also tend to balloon their prices in correspondence to the surroundings.

3. Love and care

Dwellers of posh estates are on most occasions on their own.

Unlike their slum counterparts, they would rather lock themselves away with their families, making life harder.

In the slums, however, people are more social, making life more fun as everybody feels included and backed up by the others.

Now you know.
