Very few individuals would actually locate where Nandi County is based on the low hidden profile it holds.
The County has produced eminent people in the field of athletics such as Kipchoge Keino, Pamela Jelimo, Janet Jepkosgei among other top athletes.
Surprisingly, the great leader of the Kalenjin, Koitalel Arap Samoei hails from the same region.
Kapsabet boys high school among other great high schools alumni are making history all over Kenya and beyond. All these accolades and fame of this great men and women will always go to their counterparts, Uasin Gishu County.
Uasin Gishu County has brainwashed the talents and fame that comes from Nandi County simply because Nandi County has failed to provide a conducive environment for the locals to own and instill development to the region.
Majority of the elected leaders go there for their own selfish gains and propel corruption to a higher scale which makes the region backward in development. They should know politics does not help us, residents of Nandi should also know this in particular.
Apart from the lush green tea plantations and factories that Nandi County Government boosts from, a section of every elected county government will always want to deprive the tea plantation leases.
Unlike anything, there are many sectors that are ailing or rather sectors which would have needed development as opposed to shifting focus every five years on the leases. These usual strategies are balderdash in my opinion, and county government should work to empower citizens economically.
When the devolved government was born we, the citizens of Nandi - better known as the source of champions, were proud that we shall be in the limelight soon for the better.
The first great initiative was the formation of Koitalel Arap Samoei University in Nandi Hills town some 200 meters from where the late Koitalel Arap Samoei was laid.
A foundation was laid and signpost was erected right in front of the proposed Samoei High School which was to be shifted to pave way for the University.
Everything was set, only to find out that it will not be a university but an affiliate university college of the University of Nairobi. The Nandi residents still had that great hope since it would mean more activities to boost their businesses economically.
Wonders never cease to happen, there is a signpost erected at Mosoriot Teachers College similar to Koitalel Arap Samoei University an affiliate of the University of Nairobi on the road headed to Uasin Gishu county. We are wondering what happened. Nandi County will live in the shadows of Uasin Gishu County if these issues are not addressed.
Another similar scenario is whereby all individuals holding offices prefer to reside in Uasin Gishu County as they work in Nandi County. Various leaders in the entire region for years have been known to invest in Uasin Gishu County at the expense of Nandi County.
As the County Government watchdog, I have received rumors that even the current administration is planning to purchase buses to transfer workers to and from Nandi County to Uasin Gishu County. It is a good idea, but let us encourage real estate development in our region as we aspire to build relationships with border counties.
As much as Nandi County is termed as the source of champions, Uasin Gishu County will always be the home of champions based on the slogans and all the fame that goes to the region.
I do strongly believe that if we have a strategic leader we are likely to retain both the source as well as the home of champions. Our leaders should aspire to be innovative and come up with new ideologies and focus less on past issues and Nandi County will be great one day like Uasin Gishu.
