Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga remains the opposition coalition National Super Alliance (NASA) heartbeat, whichever way you look at it.

This comes at a time when the alliance is facing a unity test, resulting from a recent disagreement within its leadership, with regards to Odinga's reconciliation with President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday.

His co-principals; Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, his Wiper party counterpart Kalonzo Musyoka and Ford Kenya chief Moses Wetangula have since expressed their disapproval of the unity pact, raising speculations of a possible fallout.

However, the alliance is likely to remain together, with the trio probable to be rendered powerless thanks to of Odinga's domination.

The vocal leader enjoys a bigger support as compared to his co-principals, almost a bigger support base than that of the three combined, giving him the moral authority to ''rule over'' them.

Unlike his counterparts, who only derive their support from a single region, the Orange Party leader enjoys a backing across the country and is in absolute control of his Luo Nyanza backyard.

This gives him a spot above the likes of Mudavadi and Wetangula who depend on support from the same region, a region where Odinga's party managed to scoop almost three quarters of the elective positions in the concluded poll.

The three are further set to suffer from their joint decision to snub the veteran politician's January 30 People's President mock inauguration, a move that saw them labeled traitors and cowards.

As a result, they will be willing to take in any insult thrown at them in a bid to make up for their earlier mistake and regain their supporters' confidence.

Knowing this, Odinga secretly moved to seal a peace deal with Kenyatta, being well aware that his co-principals had caged themselves and are therefore unable to put up any meaningful retaliation.

Lastly, Odinga has over time made a name for himself as a good king-maker, a quality, the three, all of whom are keen on vying for presidency in 2022, would like to benefit from.

Therefore, they are willing to hang around him in a bid to gain his trust, hoping that he will endorse them when the race begins.
