Nasa supporters gather outside the Supreme Court on August 18, 2017 where the coalition filed its election petition. The Supreme Court must give a ruling within 14 days. [nation.co.ke]National Super Alliance (Nasa) finally filed its presidential petition at the Supreme Court marking the beginning of a two-week long legal duel among 'the learned' friends contracted to represent various parties in the case. The petition was filed some minutes to the Friday midnight deadline, raising questions why Nasa had to wait till the last minute. However, as many may have come to realize, Nasa looks like it means business this time round. We can all agree that to compile a 25,000-page petition is not an easy task. It is tedious and time consuming.Nasa also had to utilize every minute that was at its disposal to ensure that all the evidence it has gathered is in good shape before presenting it to the Supreme Court registry. It should not be lost that one of the reasons why Nasa lost a similar petition in 2013, is because it hurriedly rushed to the Supreme Court without first gathering sufficient evidence it would require to sustain a solid case. It can be remembered that the 900-page evidence it presented to the court later was rejected due to time constraints. This time round though, Nasa seems to have gone to the court with all the evidence, reason why every second mattered to them.It could also have been a strategy to keep the respondents to the case who include Independent Boundaries and Electoral Commission (IEBC), commission chair Wafula Chebukati and President Kenyatta in suspense wondering what kind of evidence Nasa have. This would definitely affect their preparations and, perhaps, the ability to present a strong defence to NASA's advantage.
