Governors allied to the opposition risk being thrown out of office and put behind bars, a Jubilee Senator has cautioned.

According to Kiambu lawmaker Kimani Wamatangi, NASA's move to proceed with their agenda of formation of people's assembly will cost the county bosses big time.

"They have vowed to continue with the establishment of the assemblies despite the court outlawing the activities. This is outright contempt of the court," he said.

The Senator was referring to a ruling made last month by a Kitui High Court.

Justice Lilian Mutende issued orders barring regional assemblies from passing or implementing motions on the formation of the people's assemblies after a case was filed by a lobby.

Wamatangi also said NASA affiliated counties should be suspended should they use public money to advance the agenda of the opposition alliance.

"If a Governor or a county assembly spends taxpayers' money to propel the agenda, it amounts to an abuse of office and misuse of public resources. This will see the governors and MCAs surcharged and convicted," he said.

The second-time Senator called on the Office of Auditor-General and EACC to investigate if public funds have been used to finance the formation of the people's assemblies.

"We as the Senate, which acts as the counties' watchdog, will deal ruthlessly with governors indicted," Wamatangi warned.

Migori, Kwale, Siaya, Homa Bay, Busia, Vihiga and Makueni are some of the counties which have so far passed the motion to form people's assemblies.
