Opposition coalition NASA has rejected plans by the Jubilee administration to establish a dry port in Naivasha.
Led by the outfit's presidential candidate Raila Odinga, NASA warned that the plan would hurt the economy of Mombasa and its environs.
“The port of Mombasa will die because of the SGR (standard gauge railway), all the containers will be transported to Naivasha using the railway,” he said during a political rally in Kwale on Saturday.
The former Prime Minister's remarks were reiterated by Mombasa governor Ali Hassan Joho, who observed that the plan was bound to render most youths in the Coastal region jobless.
“Such a move will definitely create an employment crisis in the coast region,” he said.
He called on the locals to vote for NASA during the forthcoming polls.
“The time to take Jubilee home and have a government that is sensitive and responsive to the plight of Kenyans is now, to eliminate corruption, deal with historical injustices, social injustice and human rights,” he said.
