Opposition coalition NASA has now threatened to call for a constitutional referendum in a bid to trim executive powers.

According to NASA, their move is aimed at restoring electoral justice and the integrity of the electoral process.

Speaking on Saturday in Vihiga, NASA co-principal and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi observed that there is a wider scheme by the Jubilee administration to use its numbers in parliament to arm-twist independent institutions responsible for elections.

“It is not possible for the executive structure in the current constitution to work in this country. Kenyans should prepare themselves, we want to go for a referendum to rectify the Constitution because Jubilee wants to use its numbers in Parliament to deceive Kenyans,” he remarked.

“The people’s power shall manifest in the referendum. We want the 70% who stayed at home (during the October 26 presidential election) not to allow a few people to bully us in our country,” he added.

The Opposition wing has embarked on a push for electoral reforms, days after its presidential candidate Raila Odinga withdrawing from the presidential race in the run up to the October 26 repeat polls.
