Maize farmers in Uasin Gishu county have been asked to consider taking their produce to other National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depots so as to ease congestion being witnessed at the Eldoret depot.
Director of NCPB Eldoret depot Silas Magut says other nearby depots like the one in Kitale and Bungoma have no congestion hence need for the farmers to take advantage of it.
Speaking to the press in Eldoret town, Magut said large-scale farmers should take their produce to other depots and leave the small-scale farmers to deliver their maize in Eldoret.
"Those farmers who can afford well-conditioned lorries should deliver their produce in Kitale or Bungoma and allow those with tractors to remain here," said Magut.
"If this is done long queues we are witnessing today will not be there and it will be a win-win situation for both the farmer and us the NCPB," he added.
Last month, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett had asked large-scale farmers to take their produce to other depots and allow small-scale farmers to deliver in Eldoret but the request seemed to have fallen on deaf ears.
Tens of lorries and tractors carrying maize are lined up at the Eldoret NCPB depot waiting for their turn to deliver the produce for purchase.
