A number of leaders in Nyeri County are plotting to stop Deputy Governor Mutahi Kahiga from taking office just days after the death of Governor Wahome Gakuru.
According to the Standard, a series of night meetings by Nyeri leaders have been conducted in Nyeri and Nairobi with residents issuing ultimatums for the deputy to forget about the ascend and resign.
They insist that a fresh by-election be called where Kahiga will contest as a candidate.
“We are aware what the law provides, but let Mr Kahiga allow people to vote again in an election where he is also a candidate so that whoever wins can have full mandate of the people,” said one of the leaders as reported by the Standard.
However, Kahiga has remained adamant that he will not listen to any of the requests.
He on Friday announced that he will be sworn in Monday next week after a cleansing ceremony to be conducted at the County Government offices.
“We are going to have a cleansing ceremony carried out by the clergy at the county government offices on Monday morning and then I am going to be sworn into office in the afternoon,” the Deputy Governor said at a Friday media briefing at Green Hills Hotel.
