A member of parliament who two weeks ago stunned his constituents by saying he will vacate office if Raila Odinga was not sworn in as president has rescinded his decision.
Jared Okello of Nyando told journalists at his home on Thursday that he will not be vacating office due to what he termed as wide consultations with NASA leadership.
Okello made the declaration during a burial ceremony in his constituency early this month, where he told his mourners about his resignation plans.
“I have made it quite categorical that failure by the right honorable Raila Odinga to swear into office because he won the election, then I will vacate my position as Member of Parliament,” he had said.
The MP sent a message on Wednesday to journalists, inviting them to a presser on Thursday, where he was expected to announce his vacation of office.
“I have additionally had a series of consultations with the great people of Nyando constituency, my family, fellow leaders and the NASA principals, they have all expressed their apprehension and advised that we collectively fight for the rights of the Kenyan people from within parliament,” he said.
The NASA leadership put on hold plans to swear in Raila Odinga as the people’s president, a ceremony that was initially planned for December 12th.
