Governor Anyang Nyong'o has called on the people of Kisumu to take advantage of the high expertise of doctors expected to be imported from Cuba into the country.
Nyong'o on Monday said the development is a blessing to the country coming at a time many medical practitioners from Kenya are leaving the country to go and practice in Europe and the US.
He made the remarks after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Council of Governors and the Ministry of Health on the importation of Cuban doctors.
"As a county we have recorded notable strides in the health sector and we are working closely with other stakeholders to ensure specialised medical services are brought closer to the citizens.," Nyong'o said in a brief statement after the MoU signing.
"We fully support the acquisition of 100 Cuban medical specialists by the Kenyan government and training of 50 Kenyan medical doctors in Cuba. The Cuban doctors will work together with our doctors to provide medical services to the people."
He said Kisumu has invested a lot in primary healthcare by installing high-tech equipment in health centers to curb the high cost of curative care.
Kenyan doctors have been angered by the government move to imports medics from the Caribbean country. The doctors will arrive in two weeks.
