Nyumba Kumi initiative chairman Joseph Kaguthi. He wants Nyumba Kumi initiative introduced in secondary schools. [nation.co.ke]The Nyumba Kumi initiative could soon be introduced in secondary schools to help curb cases of school fires that have often lead to deadly carnage. Some of these school fires have been blamed on some errant students out on 'revenge missions' and, therefore, the need for students to know their colleagues and their whereabouts at any particular time.According to Nyumba Kumi Initiative Chairman Joseph Kaguthi rising cases of school fires could be sorted out in a Nyumba Kumi kind of an initiative."We will spread the initiative in schools because it could be the only solution we have. Students ought to know each other, their whereabouts and are each other's keeper," Kaguthi said in Kisumu on Thursday while addressing security officers.Critics of Nyumba Kumi, however, argue that it has failed to achieve most of the goals set out during its launch five years ago.The initiative, launched in October 2013, was set to be a forum where people in villages and estates in urban areas were required to know their neighbours in a bid to ensure public participation in security programmes. The initiative was formed in response to a string of terror attacks, gang violence and robberies around the country. According to research conducted by the faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Egerton University in 2014, one of the many challenges faced by Nyumba Kumi is corruption among police officers. The police work under poor conditions and lack of recognition from the public and inadequate facilities. This has led to instances where the police end up colluding with criminals.
