Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar was once an influential figure in the defunct CORD coalition and the Kalonzo Musyoka-led Wiper Party where he served as the secretary general. However, the vocal politician is now facing the risk of disappearing into political oblivion after his humiliating defeat in the August 8 election where he failed to oust Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho. To further complicate his political arithmetic is his decision to ditch Wiper and NASA coalition and unleashing stinging attacks against Kalonzo and NASA leader Raila Odinga.According to the Standard, Omar's troubles within CORD coalition, now NASA started in June 2016 when he fired his first salvo at Raila and Kalonzo.Omar claimed that Wiper and ODM parties are tribal outfits and suggested that Coast region politicians should chart their own political path to advance their interests.Sources within Wiper Party told the Standard that Omar's failure to heed to Raila and Kalonzo calls for him to drop his governor bid in favour of Joho further strained their relationship.Further, according to Jabess Oduor, Mombasa senator race loser, Omar's troubles in NASA were compounded when he opposed plans by the coalition for joint nomination.Omar claimed the move was a plot to rig him out in favour of Joho."Kalonzo did not attend any of Omar's rallies, including the main one at Tononoka grounds, but was present in most of Joho's functions, including the iftars," said Oduor, He believes Kalonzo’s absence suggested that the Wiper Party leader was opposed to Omar's gubernatorial candidature.
