Police in Mombasa have banned anti-IEBC protests scheduled for tomorrow countrywide by Opposition coalition NASA.

According to authorities, the demonstrations have been temporarily banned because President Uhuru Kenyatta is in town.

Speaking on Sunday, Mombasa Urban police Lucas Ogara cautioned NASA supporters against turning up for the protests on Monday.

"We will not allow. They will not do it here. Tomorrow we don't need any demonstration when we have the President here," he said.

Despite the ban, NASA has vowed to stage the demonstrations, arguing that they have a constitutional right to assemble and picket.

"If they will attempt [to ban the demo], it will be illegal, police have no powers under the law to outlaw demonstrations, neither do they have powers to permit a demonstration. They only need notification to provide security,'' NASA CEO Norman Magaya said on Sunday.

The demonstrations are seeking to have electoral reforms enacted ahead of the October 26 repeat polls.
