President Uhuru Kenyatta’s second cabinet may not be subjected to the thorough drilling and vetting that is required.

This comes after the opposition reiterated its defiance not to send any members to the national committee on the appointments, which is mandated to vet cabinet nominees.

The committee, to be chaired by the National Assembly Speaker also comprises his deputy, leaders of majority and minority in the national assembly, their respected deputies and not more than 22 other legislators nominated on party strength in parliament.

The looming of NASA MPs from the committee already casting doubt on the effectiveness of the vetting exercise, even as Jubilee prepares to name its members to the committee on Thursday.

“If the quorum is attained, then there is no illegality, they can proceed and do that, but the question would be how acceptable will these leaders be? They will be considered to have been rubber-stamped by one institution,” says one expert on political matters as interviewed on KTN.

The leader of Minority in the National Assembly John Mbadi said they will not join the committee.

“As far as we are concerned, that committee is not necessary, because the office that is supposed to appoint the cabinet secretary is vacant as we speak,” he said.

His sentiments indicate that they are yet to recognize president Uhuru Kenyatta’s win, which they as a coalition dismissed.
