An abandoned meeting, suspicions and internal intrigues between a section of Jubilee leaders from Nyamira and Kisii counties led to last minute cancellation of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tour to Gusii region scheduled last week.

Uhuru was scheduled to tour the region for two days to mobilise locals to enlist as voters in the ongoing voter registration.

But State House was forced to cancel the trip after top Jubilee leadership failed to agree on the finer details of the tour with internal politics taking centre stage.

“The president cancelled the trip because of internal local politics. There were bitter exchanges between Nyamira politicians with those from Kisii,” revealed a source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The source said: “Nyamira group wanted the president to visit the county on Friday while Kisii team insisted that the head of state tours their territory first. This led to the fallout.”

According to the source, the Kisii team was led by Charles Nyachae, Fred Matiang’i and Albert Nyaundi while Nyamira team was represented by Walter Nyambati and Joseph Kiangoi.

“The Kisii team has always treated us as slaves and that should stop. We must be respected if at all we remain in Jubilee,” said Nyambati when contacted.

However, efforts to reach Jubilee Coordinator Charles Nyachae for a comment flopped since his phone went answered.
