Opposition leaders Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka must be 'sworn in' as 'people's president' and 'deputy president' respectively, a human rights activist has said.
According to Maina Kiai, the co-director at InformAction, many Kenyans are unhappy with the constant postponements of the 'swearing-in' because they are looking forward to the 'president' to liberate them from the 'oppressive' Jubilee regime.
"The swearing-in is not about legality. It is not about Odinga. It simply symbolises- with other actions and events- that the struggle has been joined and that there is unfinished business to achieve the 3rd liberation," he said.
In an opinion piece published by Saturday Standard, Kiai warned Raila and Kalonzo that if they fail to take the oath, Kenyans will look for alternative leaders to lead them to 'Canaan'.
"Not doing it, especially when it makes Jubilee that nervous, will inevitably begin the search for new leaders to lead the charge forward," he noted.
The activist said the NASA principals must put their political differences aside and join hands in fulfilling the promises of the constitution and remaking Kenya in a way that gives dignity to the excluded majority.
"For them, the next years should not be about the presidency or succession within NASA. This has not been about them. They need to keep their eyes on that prize. Or they will be swept away in ways they could not have imagined," Kiai added.
