Raila Odinga-led National Resistance Movement (NRM) has made good its threat to launch what it calls a 'boycott of products from companies supporting dictatorial Jubilee regime'.NRM on Friday listed Safaricom, Bidco and Brookside as some of the firms whose products and services their supporters should boycott."We will resist the products of these companies because they are beneficiaries of the regime that killed people in this country," said Suna East MP Junet Mohamed, as quoted by the Nation. However, how practical is this NRM move that amounts to economic sabotage?First, it is good to remember that President Uhuru Kenyatta while launching Standard Gauge Railway on May this year, termed economic saboteurs as capital offenders, whom he won't hesitate to sign for their hanging.''Those who shall be found guilty of economic sabotage will be hanged. This is a capital offence whose punishment is death,'' Uhuru said, as quoted by Standard. So, is Odinga risking going to the gallows by following this path? Well, we can only wait to see how many economic saboteurs Uhuru will hang now that even his family business (Brookside Dairies) is among the top three Raila wants supporters to give a wide berth. This, nevertheless, can only near reality, if the affected companies are able to prove in a court of law that they indeed suffered losses arising from NRM's pronouncements. However, the court will almost certainly award damage costs to these firms and not necessarily sentence anyone to hang.Safaricom is accused of aiding rigging of August poll in favour of President Kenyatta. On the other hand, NRM accuses Brookside and Bidco of funding President Kenyatta's Jubilee Party.NRM has now given its supporters five days to find alternative products saying the move is just the beginning of economic liberation in Kenya.
