Nominated MP Oburu Oginga has said that he rejected an offer to join the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA) to create time to campaign for his blood brother, Cord leader Raila Odinga as he seeks to ascend to power in the forthcoming general polls.

Speaking to the press on Monday, Oburu said that he decided to drop out of the race to the assembly to ensure that he brother becomes the head of state after the August elections.

"People are focusing on a non-issue...I declined the move after realising more than three people applied. That is being spun to look like a favour because I am related to Raila," he said, as quoted by Star.

The legislator nominations to join the team to contest for the seat had started to cause a storm in the National Super Alliance with a section of leaders accusing Raila for nepotism.

Oburu, however declined the offer, adding that he is qualified but not ready to take any position for the sake of his blood brother.

"I am just as qualified as any other person but I cannot focus on EALA as well as presidential campaigns. That is why I declined the nomination," he added.

Meanwhile, the nomination of different leaders to join the Assembly has lead to reactions from both the opposition and ruling party.
