According to the society, at least 260,000 Kenyans are estimated to be affected by floods and the Red Cross society needs funds to assist 21 counties.

KRCS Secretary General Abbas Gullet said worst affected counties include Garissa, Tana River, Isiolo, Marsabit, Kilifi, Kisumu, Turkana, Mandera, Makueni, and Kitui.

Dr Gullet said that many places in the affected counties are inaccessible and there is a huge risk of disease outbreak in the flooded areas.

Dr Gullet urged the government and well-wishers to fund its flood response and recovery program that will cater for immediate deliveries of emergency food, nutrition, water, sanitation and hygiene services.

Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, the secretary general noted that the society has only Sh50 million allocated for relief operations in its accounts.

“Our appeal is to all the stakeholders, local and international partners to support us in mitigation efforts. 48,177 households have been displaced so far. This translates to 260,200 people.”

“The emergency fund will go towards the provision of shelter and settlement, health, and nutrition, water, and sanitation as well as food security for the affected population,” said Dr Gullet.

A report from the humanitarian agency recently revealed that over 100 people have been killed following flash floods across the country.
